Parkinson disease
what is parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that affects how the brain controls movement. Over time, it can also impact speech, voice, swallowing, and thinking. Parkinson’s affects each person differently, and symptoms may change gradually, which is why early support and ongoing care are important.
How Parkinson’s Disease Can Affect Communication, Thinking, and Swallowing
Voice and Speech
Many people with Parkinson’s notice changes in their voice and speech, such as:
A softer or quieter voice
Reduced vocal clarity or monotone speech
Slurred or rushed speech
Difficulty being heard or understood, especially in groups
Swallowing
Swallowing difficulties are common in Parkinson’s disease and may include:
Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
Difficulty chewing or moving food in the mouth
Taking longer to finish meals
Increased risk of food or liquid going “down the wrong way”
Language and Cognition (Thinking Skills)
For some individuals, Parkinson’s can also affect thinking and communication, including:
Difficulty finding words or organizing thoughts
Slower thinking or processing speed
Changes in memory or attention
Difficulty planning, problem-solving, or multitasking
How Speech-Language Therapy Can Help
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are specially trained to address the communication, swallowing, and cognitive changes associated with Parkinson’s disease. At Aubin Aphasia Speech & Language Center, we offer evidence-based therapy programs designed specifically for individuals with Parkinson’s.
We can help by:
Improving voice loudness, clarity, and confidence
Providing specialized voice treatment programs, including
SPEAK OUT! Therapy
Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT)
Evaluating and treating swallowing difficulties to support safe and comfortable eating
Addressing changes in attention, memory, and thinking skills
Teaching practical strategies to support communication in daily life
Educating family members and care partners on how to support communication and swallowing
Our goal is to help individuals with Parkinson’s maintain strong communication, safe swallowing, and quality of life for as long as possible.
SPEAK OUT! Therapy
The SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program, developed by Parkinson Voice Project®, helps people with Parkinson’s and related disorders REGAIN and RETAIN their speech and swallowing.
The program can improve volume, articulation, breath support for
speech, vocal quality, intonation, and facial expression. Patients and families also report reduced drooling and improved swallowing. This highly effective, research-based treatment combines education, individual and group speech therapy, and daily home practice. The “Circle of INTENT” outlines the various therapy
components and emphasizes that this program is lifelong.
